What It Means To Be A Progress Volunteer

The decision to serve as a Progress volunteer, is based on a commitment to the contribution towards peace, community development and human rights and in support of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

As a Progress Volunteer you have the extraordinary opportunity to create beneficial change and have a positive impact on people's lives. Even if your assignment at Progress is fairly short, it can have a long-term impact and achieve a ripple effect that extends far beyond the immediate beneficiaries of your efforts.

Your role as a Progress Volunteer is that of both facilitator and catalyst. Progress encourages you to be creative and entrepreneurial in finding ways to develop capacity and to promote and foster volunteerism for peace and development - both within and beyond the formal framework of your assignment.

Ultimately, if development is to be effective and sustainable, the people affected by it must take ownership of its processes and drive them forward. Indeed, sustainable national development can only be reached if millions of people around the country voluntarily mobilize to achieve them. Your actions as a Progress Volunteer can also inspire others to volunteer and to believe that they too can make a contribution towards peace and development.

Progress Volunteers come from all parts of the country and with diverse backgrounds, and thanks to this wide variety of perspectives they bring a range of experiences, expectations and approaches. This diversity gives their work a particular dynamism.

Progress Volunteers are thus also a part of a global, cumulative effort that integrates volunteerism as a core contribution to peace and development: and the concept of volunteerism for peace and development .

Volunteering For Peace And Development

The Progress Volunteers programme is inspired by the conviction that volunteerism is a powerful means of engaging people in tackling development challenges worldwide. Everyone can contribute their time, skills and knowledge through volunteer action, and their combined efforts can be a significant force for achieving peace and development.

The concept of volunteerism for development ,centres on optimizing volunteerism’s impact on peace and development. Achieving this requires the cooperation and commitment of the public sector, civil society and the private sector with support from the government and the international community. Individual citizens also have an important role to play through volunteering.

Volunteerism for development enhances the capacity of people to exercise choices to set and achieve their own development objectives, which can result in real improvements that benefit others as well as themselves. If development is to be effective and sustainable, the people affected by it must take ownership of, and give relevance to, its processes and drive them forward through civic engagement.

Every day, individuals are engaged in development initiatives through volunteer actions both large and small in an effort to improve conditions for others and themselves. Volunteerism by many millions of people is critical to achieving the National Development Goals

Volunteerism strengthens—and is strengthened by—trust, solidarity and reciprocity among citizens, and it can transform the pace and nature of development. Volunteerism is purposeful, creating opportunities for citizens to participate in development. Through volunteerism, more people participate in development, and at all levels of society, which empowers them and gives them a personal stake in their country’s future.

In this way, volunteerism fosters secure and stable environments conducive to the peaceful resolution of conflict. Pr ogress strengthens the capacities of national partners, enabling local ownership of peace and development processes and encouraging recognition of volunteers and their cohesive engagement for peace building. mobilizing volunteers
