‘Progress’ Special Cardiac Ward – AFIC/NIHD

Foundation For ‘Progress’, under its agenda of ‘Building Partnerships, Promoting Sustainability’, in the health sector, has entered into a MOU with the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology, wherein ‘Progress’ as a token of recognition of the medical services being rendered by the AFIC in the treatment and rehabilitation of cardiac patients, has undertaken to sponsor and equip an entire 30 bed ward and its related office complex at the AFIC, Rawalpindi.

This includes complete air-conditioning, vinyl carpeting, driveway and toilets reconstruction, provision of patient beds, bedside trolleys, cardiac monitors, defibrillators, ECG machines, nursing equipments, refrigerators, water coolers, computers, television sets, office furnishings, setting up of a library and dinning mess, linen, blankets and other patient ward utilities and medical related equipments, essential for the successful operation of such a cardiac unit.

In addition, ‘Progress’ has also provided an X-Ray plant with fluoroscopic unit to be installed at the newly established outpatient X-Ray Department at the AFIC.


This ‘Progress’ project is directed at supporting AFIC in its efforts of extending the provision of cardiac services to the poor and needy general population. With the addition of 30 beds the AFIC inpatient capacity has increased by 12.5%, not only sharing the workload and the resources but also shortening the long waiting time of the cardiac patients expecting invasive and noninvasive procedures.

It has also been provided for in the MOU that ‘Progress’ and AFIC shall encourage, promote and facilitate collaboration between foreign cardiac consultants and medical institutions with a view of training the Armed Forces and the civil doctors in the techniques of latest invasive and the non-invasive cardiac procedures and the specialty of cardiology in general.

In addition to creating public awareness, educating and motivating the general public on the preventative aspects of cardiovascular diseases through dissemination of information via conferences, walks, talks, health camps, mass media and distribution of literature on the subject matter.

This project shall also foster, promote and develop partnerships and collaborations between the various health sector stakeholders, for improving the national health care services, which is among the top priority of the Government of Pakistan.

The special ‘Progress’ ward was inaugurated on 10th December 2005, by the Commander X Corps in the presence of Dr. M.A Wajid, Chairman & President ‘Progress’, Surgeon General, Lt. Gen. Syed Afzal Ahmed, Commandant AFIC, Maj. Gen. MMH Nuri, Deputy Commandant, Brig. Ishaque Ahmad, senior doctors including, Brig. Azhar Rasheed, Brig. Naeem Khan, Brig. Waqar Ahmed, Brig. Zafar-ul-Islam, Chief Matron, Brig. Perveen and other distinguished civil and military dignitaries.

The Special ‘Progress’ Ward successfully played an important role in the care and treatment of earthquake patients and was designated as a specialized center by the Army Medical Corps in this critical hour of national crisis.
